this had is a very busy square in newtown, connecticut. some people are coming from towns around the area just to see what's going on here and to help console some of the folks here. as i said at the beginning of this broadcast, we're going to go through this as sensitively and respectful as we can do. this is tough for any journalist to cover but not as near as difficult as what the families are dealing with and our hearts and prayers go out with them. and that said, i want to say that we are awaiting the newest news conference from the connecticut state police in newtown, connecticut. here's what we know right now. law enforcement official says -- and this is the suspect's name. 20-year-old adam lanza. we will say that as little as possible. we have to do it for the record. that he had some sort of altercation with people at the school a few days before the shooting. the official does not know -- doesn't know any details about that altercation or who it involved. we also learned from a law enforcement source that the suspect tried to buy

david, where exactly are you in newtown? >> wolf, i'm standing directly in front of the firehouse right now. and that's been essentially used as sort of a makeshift holding place. for a lot of these families and children and parents who essentially just are trying to cope with what has transpired, i can count probably at least half a dozen emergency vehicles. so it is still very active scene down here. helicopters flying overhead, fbi, atf and local and state officials are all on scene as is the media here, as families walk out. many people tried to speak with them, but many are just inconsolable. you see people walking out, parents clutching their children, tears in their eyes, speaking on cell phones and just trying to convey the gravity of the situation here. and i had an opportunity to speak with a local teacher, not a teacher at the elementary school where the shooting took place, but in the nearby school system and she said the people move here, often for the schools, so you have people coming from in and around the st

schools in newtown will reopen tomorrow. but the classes at sandy hook elementary, they're going to be suspended until further notice. we are also expecting another briefing from connecticut police, could start any minute now. we'll be monitoring that, going to bring it to you live as soon as that starts as well. >> reporter: lieutenant paul vance who's been briefing roertds, he'll be briefing once again. they were just 6 years old, their lives cut short by a horrific act of violence. next hour families face what seems unbearable as they say good-bye to two first graders killed in the shooting at the elementary school here in newtown. funerals are set to begin for jack pinto and noah pozner. jack loved sports, baseball, wrestling, but football was his favorite. noah loved playing with his siblings, especially his twin sister. jack and noah are two of the 20 children who died. at last night's prayer service, president obama called out each one by name. >> let the little children come to me, jesus said, and do not hinder them.
